Ford is facing potential industrial action from over 3,000 white-collar workers in the U.K. after union members overwhelmingly rejected the company’s pay offer.

The Unite trade union has warned Ford of potential strike action if the company refuses to negotiate through the U.K.’s independent conciliation service, Acas.

Union Members Reject Ford’s Pay Offer

Union members have expressed dissatisfaction with Ford’s pay proposal, which includes a one-off payment of 5% of their salary for salaried staff for 2024, without an actual wage increase.

Management-grade workers were offered a performance-related bonus, which does not guarantee a cost-of-living increase.

Ford’s Response and Negotiation Stance

Ford has stated that it has been in pay negotiations since the end of the previous year and remains open to dialogue.

The company is willing to continue discussions through established bargaining frameworks on the offer made, despite the internal rejection of the offer by union members.

Potential Industrial Action

Unite has indicated that if Ford does not agree to negotiate through Acas, it will initiate the process of balloting its members for potential strike action across various Ford sites in the U.K., from Liverpool to Essex.

Ford’s Financial Performance

Ford recently reported strong fourth-quarter earnings and full-year adjusted earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) of $10.42 billion on revenue of $176.2 billion.

Despite this financial success, the company’s pay offer has been met with significant opposition from its workforce.

Unite’s Stance on Ford’s Pay Offer

Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham criticized Ford’s pay offer as being driven by corporate greed. He stated that the company could afford to provide a fair pay offer without strings attached.

The union has pledged full support to Ford’s salaried and managerial staff in their demand for better pay and conditions.

Potential Consequences of Industrial Action

Unite National Officer Alison Spencer-Scragg emphasized the workers’ dissatisfaction with Ford’s pay offers and warned of the potential for formal industrial action if Ford continues to refuse negotiation talks through Acas.

The union urges Ford to reconsider its position to avoid potential disruptions.

In summary, Ford faces the prospect of industrial action from its white-collar workers in the U.K. if it does not engage in meaningful negotiations over pay offers.

The situation underscores the broader challenges faced by workers in the face of rising inflation and the cost-of-living crisis, as well as the importance of fair compensation and dialogue between employers and employees.
