Xpeng AeroHT, an affiliate of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng, is set to deliver its flying cars to customers by 2026, as revealed by Xpeng’s co-president Brian Gu in an interview with CNBC on Friday.

In the previous year, Xpeng AeroHT showcased the Land Aircraft Carrier, a large truck equipped with a detachable two-seater passenger electric drone. This innovative flying car can separate from the truck, allowing passengers to board the drone and take flight.

Flying Vehicle Set For 2026 Delivery

Brian Gu mentioned that the flying vehicle will be available for pre-order this year, with the company aiming for a 2026 delivery.

“The reason we are confident, because we are designing this for the use not in urban centers, but for outskirts in scenic areas where … we will work with municipalities to create flying parks and flying zones that allow people to enjoy flying without the hassle of getting all the complicated approvals,” Gu explained.

2026 Delivery Reflects a Slight Delay

This year, Xpeng stated that the flying car is undergoing a certification process with the Chinese aviation regulator. The 2026 delivery timeline is a slight delay from the previously projected fourth-quarter 2025 target.

Gu emphasized that passengers will not need a special license to fly the drone initially. “Because we are using leisure and sports-related use case for the initial use of that flying device. As you move more closer to urban … centers, you do need special licenses and that will be a lot more complicated to get approval for,” he said.

Xpeng’s Ambitious Robotics Goals

Xpeng is also exploring other electric mobility sectors. CEO He Xiaopeng has expressed that robotics and flying cars are part of the company’s long-term ambitions.

“With the development of technology, the form of mobility will evolve from wheels to wings, propellers, 4 legs or 2 feet,” He stated. “Technology should help people have better and happier lives. This has always been my goal.”

He Xiaopeng predicts that all automakers will eventually become both car manufacturers and robotics companies, a transition he believes could take 10 to 30 years. Xpeng is considering robots as a transportation tool “in a low-speed and random environment.”

He elaborated, “As it gets better and smarter in the long run, it could help us with some simple repetitive tasks. As the transportation tool becomes more and more intelligent, it could help us take on some tasks. This is how we envision it.”

Flying Car Represents a Technological Leap Forward

Xpeng AeroHT’s flying car project represents a significant step in the evolution of personal transportation. By targeting non-urban areas initially, the company aims to circumvent the regulatory complexities associated with urban airspace.

The development of flying parks and zones in scenic areas could provide a practical solution for leisure and sports-related flying activities without the need for extensive licensing.

In summary, Xpeng AeroHT’s ambitious flying car project underscores the broader trend of technological advancement in personal mobility. The company’s strategic approach, coupled with its ongoing efforts in robotics and electric vehicles, positions it at the forefront of the future of transportation.

The successful delivery of flying cars by 2026 could pave the way for further innovations and a new era in mobility solutions.
