Long-Term Supply Agreement with LG Chem

Under this new supplier contract, LG Chem is set to provide GM with over 500,000 tons of cathode materials crucial for battery production. This includes a mix of nickel, cobalt, manganese, and aluminum, starting from 2026 through to 2035.

These materials are pivotal for the development of EV batteries, with the supplied quantity expected to support the production of five million EVs, each boasting a range of over 300 miles.

Partnership Expansion and Production Infrastructure

The cathode materials will be sourced from an LG Chem facility currently under construction in Tennessee. These materials are intended for use in GM’s North American battery cell plants, including three joint ventures with Ultium Cells, an LG spinoff.

This collaboration, initially announced in July 2022, has now been detailed and extended beyond its original 2030 expiration, demonstrating a deepening partnership between GM and LG Chem.

Adjusting to Market Realities

The slower-than-anticipated uptake of EVs has led automakers like GM to recalibrate their strategies, either by reducing costs or postponing initiatives.

This extended contract with LG Chem reflects GM’s adaptability to the evolving market dynamics and its unwavering dedication to the electric vehicle sector.

Strengthening North American EV Supply Chain

LG Chem’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with GM in North America underscores the strategic importance of this partnership.

Jeff Morrison, GM’s Vice President of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, emphasized that this agreement reinforces GM’s resolve to establish a robust and sustainable supply chain for EV batteries, crucial for meeting the growing demand for electric vehicles.

Significance of the Supply Deal

This contract is likely one of the most substantial agreements GM has entered into for EV supplies, indicating the automaker’s serious approach to electrification.
